Announcing VITech Live!

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:55

Although the episode count doesn't show it, we're very quickly approaching our first birthday. This is a remarkable achievement, particularly considering our near state of closure back in August last year, and we thought that we should celebrate it in some way. After considering a couple of ideas we eventually decided to pursue the possibility of holding a live edition of VITech, called VITech Live!, and we're happy to report that it is extremely likely that this will take place.

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide a date, time or even a location for this show, although we expect to stream at 18:00 UTC (11:00 AM Pacific, 2:00 PM Eastern and 7:00 PM in the UK) on Saturday, May 31. However, to make this show the best it can be and to decide on a final date and time, we require some feedback from you, the listeners:

Please send any feedback about VITech live to feedback@vitechpodcast.com or use our contact form. All feedback will be carefully considered when preparing for this show.

We look forward to receiving your feedback and will post another news article with final information closer to the date.

The New Website Is Launched!

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:51

Welcome to our new website, which we launched today at a little after 20:00 UTC.

When VITech was launched on June 3, 2007, it was suggested that a simple, single-page website would be satisfactory. As the only code available to us at the time was that of Sean Randall's Technicalish podcast, which was only one page, and we wished to launch as soon as possible, we decided to adopt such a website design. As time progressed, however, we noticed several drawbacks:

After considerable work, we are very pleased to announce that our website has been completely redesigned in an attempt to rectify the points above:

Along with our new website, we have now changed our contact information. All of the new details can be found on the Contact Page, but a summary of changes is written below:

We hope you have found this news article informative and that it has answered all of your immediate questions. If you would like further information, please feel free to Contact Us and we will be happy to assist.

Curtacy of a new service, Pod Linez, you can now listen to us on the telephone! From within the United States and Canada, simply dial 1-650-523-6853. Note: long-distance charges may apply.

We're Going UP in the World!

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:43

We're proud to announce that this week, Jeff Bishop of The Desert Skies and Darrell Shandrow of the Blind Access Journal played VITech episode 12, about FTP, as part of their Main Menu technology program on ACB Radio. This has increased VITech's audience expanentially and we would like to thank Jeff and Darrell most sincerely.

New Domain Name

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:39

Due to an unforeseen technical problem, RandyLaptop.com has been taken down. As a result, the old VITech website no longer works. We have therefore moved the podcast to its own domain name, VITechPodcast.com, and we would greatly appreciate it if you spread the word.

All of our contact information will remain the same for the foreseeable future, and if RandyLaptop.com is revived and our account is still active we will redirect it to the new website for your convenience.

Changes at VITech

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:35

Mobeen was recently informed that he has been accepted at a residential college and his funding application was successful. For this reason, this week's episode will be the last episode where he is the regular host. However, he is still a part of VITech management and he will continue to host episodes as time permits.

After much consideration we have decided to appoint Aedan as the new regular host, with Matthew and Brandon hosting occasional eppisodes where necessary. We have also appointed Aedan and Brandon to the VITech management team.

New Google Group

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:31

In an effort to improve this podcast, we have launched a VITech Google Group.

This group has several purposes, described below:

In other words, if your message is related to VITech, it's welcome here!

To join this ever-growing group of VITech listeners, simply send a blank E-Mail to VITechPodcast-subscribe@GoogleGroups.com and reply to the confirmatory message.

VITech in Danger of Closing

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:28

We regret to inform you that, in the two months that VITech has been running, we have received very little feedback. With this in mind, we have decided that VITech may have to close due to lack of listenership.

The recording, editing and producing of each episode of the VITech podcast is an enjoyable, but time-consuming, process. Maintaining the website is also a time-consuming process at present, as we are still in the process of re-writing our podcast generator. Checking E-mail, whilst not necessarily time-consuming, is nevertheless tedious. With Mobeen wishing to attend residential college in September, we have decided that, without listenership, continuing to run the VITech podcast will be inpractical.

If you listen to VITech and would like to see it continue, please E-Mail Us or, alternatively, telephone us in the United Kingdom on 0700-598-1840. Please contact us by August 31, 2007.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Our First Advert

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:24

Today, Matthew was interviewed by Brian Hartgen for the T&T Consultancy Ltd Blog and Podcast. Matthew was introduced as "... one of the voices behind the newly established VITech Podcast...", and a link to VITech was placed on the blog. We're hopeful that such exposure will increase VITech's listener figures and thank Brian and T&T Consultancy for their generocity.

We Have a Phone Number!

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:20

Thanks to the folks at One Number For Life, VITech now has a telephone number! From within the United Kingdom, dial 0700-598-1840 to get in touch with Mobeen or Matthew.

Please Note: when tested, this number failed to work with Skype. Therefore, calling from outside the United Kingdom may incur a substantial cost. Please also note that, when calling from a Brittish Telecomunications line in the United Kingdom, this call will be charged at the rate of a call to a standard cellular telephone.

More Website Updates

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:16

This is just a quick note to inform you of a few changes to the website:

Firstly, the text of the first section on the home page has changed slightly to better reflect the current hierarchical structure, including Sean's resignation from the podcast.

Secondly, I have finally fixed the bug which many people have been E-mailing about since the launch of the podcast at the start of this month: podcasts are now listed on the home page and in the feed in reverse order, newest first.

As usual, please send comments and questions to Matthew.

Sean Leaves VITech

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:12

We are sorry to announce that, due to the many commitments of college life, Sean Randall has resigned from the VITech team. The core management team is therefore only comprised of Mobeen and Matthew.

For now, things will continue as usual, although development of the new website will naturally take longer as Sean is no longer involved in this process.

Website Updates

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:08

Firstly, we're pleased to say that we now have some meaningful text on our home page, so you no longer have to read a news article to find the information you need.

Secondly, over the past few weeks, we have received numerous E-mails informing us that the podcast feed does not work in certain, mainly web-based, podcast receivers. We suspect we now know the cause of this problem and we believe it is now fixed. However, if you are still experiencing problems, please E-Mail Matthew and he will send you a new feed URL which will provide him with some diagnostic information to assist him in refixing the problem.

We will also be reworking some other elements of the feed and the website in general over the next few months, fixing bugs and adding new features. The other major bug we hope to fix within the next few weeks is one which has been E-mailed to us a few times, where new episodes are appearing at the bottom of the web page and podcast feed rather than at the top. Another thing we have in mind is a contact form which will allow you to contact any of the panelists on VITech.

We appreciate your patients and co-operation as we work towards a better site.

VITech is Launched!

Posted on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 00:02:04

Welcome to VITech: Technology from a Blindness Perspective! Mobeen and Matthew have been working overtime over the past two weeks, and it's with great pleasure that we announce that the VITech podcast is finally launched.

Unfortunately, the website is a little cramped at the moment, but we're hopeful that that will change over the coming weeks. For now, the important information is in this news article:

We hope to publish an episode every Sunday at 19:00 UTC (3:00 PM Eastern, 12:00 PM Pacific). Each episode should have a duration of approximately fourty-five minutes and concentrate on one topic. Each week, our panel of experts will share their opinions about that topic.

You can access each eppisode using the table on the website or by adding
http://vitech.randylaptop.com/feed.xml
to your podcast client.

If you'd like to contact us about VITech, please E-mail VITechPodcast@GMail.com.

Finally, don't forget about our sponsor: SpokenText.net - your free, online text-to-speech converter.
